August at The Gathering Place

A month of patience, community, and supporting the farmers and makers who keep our tables full.

There is something about August in Texas that teaches patience. The gardens aren't bursting with the same excitement they had in spring. The grass crunches under your feet. Water hoses seem to run all day. The afternoon sun reminds everyone—plants, animals, and people alike—that rest is just as much a part of nature as growth.

This is one of the hardest months for our local farmers. Our laying hens often produce fewer eggs as they work to regulate their body temperature. Dairy animals naturally produce less milk when they're under heat stress. Vegetable crops require constant watering just to survive, and many plants slow their growth entirely until cooler weather returns.

Behind every gallon of milk, every dozen eggs, every tomato, and every loaf of bread is someone waking up before sunrise, hauling water, repairing irrigation, checking livestock, and hoping the weather gives them a break.

Why August Is the Time to Support Local

August is the month when supporting local matters most. When you choose to shop from your neighborhood farmer instead of a warehouse hundreds of miles away, you're helping keep small farms alive through one of the toughest seasons of the year. You're investing in families who care deeply about the land, the animals, and the food they produce.

While the fields may slow down, The Gathering Place certainly doesn't. We've filled August with opportunities to learn, create, and connect with this incredible community.

• August 1 • 10 AM to 2 PM — Barter Market Day
  Bring your homemade goods, garden harvest, handcrafted items, or useful treasures to trade with your neighbors. No money required—just community, conversation, and a reminder that sharing resources is an old tradition worth keeping alive.

• August 8 • 1 PM — DIY Makeup Workshop
  Learn to make your own natural mascara and lip gloss using simple ingredients you can feel good about. You'll leave with beautiful handmade products and the knowledge to recreate them at home.

• August 11 • 12 PM — Lunch and Learn: Seed Saving 101
  Join Sarah as she teaches the timeless practice of saving seeds. Discover how to preserve your favorite varieties, increase garden resilience, and become a little more self-sufficient one season at a time.

• August 20 • 6:30 PM — You Thought You Knew Chamomile
  Most people think of chamomile as a sleepy bedtime tea, but this remarkable little flower has so much more to offer. Join us as we dive into its fascinating history, medicinal uses, and practical applications while crafting something special to take home.
